Screaming Blue Messiahs - Vision in Blues [2016] (5 x CD's)

SCREAMING BLUE MESSIAHS

Screaming Blue Messiahs - Vision in Blues [2016] (5 x CD's)

This box set from Easy Action finally does justice to a band that had been rather forgotten about as the years went on, but one that kept a bright light burning for scratchy mayhem and the UK R’n’B sound alive in the 1980's in their own special way. A handsome box houses the CDs, a 7″ inch single of live tracks dating from 1984 plus a large booklet including an in-depth interview with Bill Carter about the history of the band. It brings everything together the band recorded as well as unissued live material, which will be a positive boon for the fans and an eye opener to anyone who thought that Punk and the Blues only met up on the first White Stripes album. The Screaming Blue Messiahs can finally take their place in the lineage of great British R’n’B which runs from the Pirates through to Dr Feelgood and stand shoulder to shoulder with them both as one of the key bands to have ever picked up the Blues in this country.

There's no doubt that The Messiahs' star should have burned bright and long, and it frankly didn't. Rarely have the words "ahead of their time" been more apt. They were too soon for the full force of the indie wave that The Pixies surfed. They were before grunge, and it is argued in the sleeve-notes that like all great bands, they influenced more records than they sold. And they were way too soon for the blues punkification much loved by people like Jon Spencer and The White Stripes. What is more of a shame is that not only did we lose the band all too soon, but their record company have sat on their catalog for years which has hastened the memories to fade and for history to be rewritten without them. 1. Incredible band. Hugely underrated. Saw them live at the Marquee in London many years ago. Loved Bill Carter's stage presence. I have all my old vinyl copies of these. Great set!! SleepyP x
