James Moody - Just Moody (Quadromania) [2005] (4 x CD's)

This 4 x CD set covers a lot of Moody's work from 1948 to 1954, much of it in Europe, where he seems to have spent a lot of time. There are no sleeve notes, but full personnels and dates. Moody was a pretty good sax player (and flautist too, but there's none of that here) and a long term associate of Dizzy Gillespie but seems to have missed out on being one of the pack of young players in New York in the fifties and sixties, so never established all that much of a name. Overall, this is a decent portrait of the work of a good tenor saxist in varied and usually pleasing company. It also has the added interest of drawing attention to some good but now largely forgotten musicians and of showing a glimpse of the early days of European modern jazz.
