Billie Holiday - Lady Day, The Complete Billie Holiday On Columbia [2009] (10 x CD's)

This 10 CD Version of the multi-award winning deluxe box set from the jazz great, released to mark the 50th anniversary of her death. This set is a European budget edition of the more lavish US box. CD's are in simple cardboard sleeves and the booklet fit neatly in a cardboard box the size of a thick jewel case. The sound is as good as the US edition. Extra tracks (alternative takes and airchecks) start on disc 7 and take up the last three discs, as on the US edition. The booklet contains full production notes, an alphabetical song index, and Gary Giddins' essay "Ladies Day". Another essay by Farah Jasmine Griffin describes literary references to Ms. Holiday. The sound on these remasters is excellent: hi-hats and bass are easily heard. The sound is possibly as open and natural as it will ever get.  Although Billie's Columbia recordings have been reissued many times and in many formats, the one used here with the sessions complete as far as master takes are concerned is most pleasing as it preserves the mood of those sessions without getting bogged down. Among the delights: songs that somehow never get featured on Billie Holiday compilations but contain stellar performances by the accompanists can be enjoyed side by side with the better known ones. Any of these ten discs (and especially the first six) can be appreciated as fine representations of the music of the era.  With her you also have encyclopedia of jazz artists backing her and soloing with great delicacy and beauty, saying just enough to match the beauty of her voice, Duke Ellington and his orchestra, Count Basie and his orchestra, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Benny Carter, Johny Hodges, Ben Webster, Gene Krup, Cosy Cole the list is emence over 65 star and prime movers in Jazz of that day are included in her line-Ups, to cover every mood you may come across in your life. Tales of love and joy told by a voice who as well as being great story teller, is also a very fine instrument as well.

If you have any interest in Jazz, Popular Music or Singing, you must have this recording. In Jazz, there is nothing better. Billie Holiday's influence in Popular Music and everything we now know and love about singing cannot be overstated and these recordings from Columbia in the 30's showcase her voice beautifully.(Amazon)

Billie Holiday - Complete Commodore & Decca Masters [2009] (3 x CD's)

Billie Holiday's music falls under three categories, her small band Columbia recordings of the thirties and early forties (some of the finest masterpieces in jazz), her achingly mature torch songs of the fifties produced by Norman Granz for the Verve labels and the middle period that this set covers...1939-1950. This was the era when Billie reached for a wider more populist audience, recording with strings for the first time and dominating each chorus without breaking for soloists. These recordings are previously available on other sets containing complete and multiple takes but here for the first time the masters from both Commodore and Decca are brought together on one collection. All Holiday fans have their own favourite era but there is something in all three to be valued and enjoyed. Milt Gabler's productions extend from his small Commodore sides to the lush Decca releases. Here we have the darkness of "Strange Fruit" the anti-lynching masterpiece and without question one of the songs of the century, the poignant romantic yearning of Billie's self penned "Don't Explain" and the heavy swinging lesser known tracks like "Baby Get Lost". Like all of Billie's work, evey range of emotion is covered. Limited edition, only available on-line and nicely designed with some fine photographs and full discography this is an accessible collection on what is perhaps a too underated period in Billie's catalogue. Billie Holiday - The Complete Billie Holiday On Verve 1945-1959 [1992] (10 x CD's)

Ten CD's with everything Billie Holiday recorded on Verve Records between 1945 and her death in 1959 not only the songs, but concert introductions, some of the rehearsals, and between-take studio chatter, too. All of which makes for a definitive portrait of Lady Day in her final years. For a long time these recordings were disparaged because it was said her voice was no longer fine and mellow, "ravaged" by hard living, jail time, booze, and drugs. And there's no question that her later tone is darker, more brittle and unstable than it had been in the 30's, but somehow I find myself listening to this music more often than those Brunswick/Columbia or Decca sides, anyway. Like Frank Sinatra, who so often paid tribute to her influence, Holiday's artistry was never based on virtuosity; it was about interpretation, bringing out the emotions in a song and giving a personal reading. She never stopped doing that, and for all the "strange fruit" you'll find in this collection, it's a gold mine.

By the time she got to Verve, Billie was in her fourth incarnation as a recording artist. I can't think of another so prominent singer who went through so many changes. On Columbia she was young, ebullient, startingly original and enjoyed hit after hit after hit with often unremarkable material she made remarkable. By the time she moved to Commodore she had become a glamorous and sophisticated supper club star and she was a more polished and mature artist. Then came Decca and Milt Gabler told her he wanted to try her as a pop singer. Drenched in strings by the brilliant Gordon Jenkins, who adored her as an artist and a person, and given topnotch material, she proved a vivid, luxurious stylist worthy of her international fame. Then came Verve. The voice was deeper, rougher, harder, her style had turned into a bag of affectations, her stylings were totally predictable and by all rights her recordings should have been unimportant. Not so. She had become a world-weary, wise actress in song and virtually everything she recorded for Norman Granz was compelling. Listening to song after song after song in this collection I realized, having never heard the music in order in its entirety, I had missed a point. I think the woman was simply incapable of being uninteresting. There isn't a record here that isn't just fascinating. By the time we get to the final album, on M-G-M, when she was literally on her last legs, the wonder is the album is so hypnotic (and at the time of its release was a big deal). Her life did not turn out the way it should have. She should have ended healthy and wealthy. At least she ended up celebrated and loved. The records can't show her beauty, elegance, terrific taste in fashion, beautiful grooming and hypnotic presence as a performer but this is music you can listen to over and over, year after year and still discover something new. 6. Thanks! - I'd bought the Columbia and Verve boxes, but missed the Commodore and Decca sides box. And it looks like it's out of print now - so it's much appreciated!

  7. When I was a pup and knew that, sooner or later, I'd have to become acquainted with Billie Holiday, I had no idea that the drugs and the cops and the racism that a black superstar of that era could not help but be confronted with had done such irreparable damage to her voice. I was a shaggy-haired teenage rocker in the late 70s, who avoided jazz and nightclub acts like they were kryptonite. So my first sampling of Lady Day was from her late Verve period in the mid-50s, when she had what I can only call her "drunken grandma" voice.

I was shocked; how did she get so friggin' famous?, I wondered, and went right on avoiding her music. (Of course, many years later, I discovered the sides she'd cut at Columbia and Decca - ahhh......now THIS was more like it!)

While there can be no diminishing the bloody price racism took out of artists like Holliday, made worse by the fact that show business in those days was the private kingdom of lowlife gangsters - of both races - if anybody ever decides to write an unflinching, warts-and-all history of the dark side of American popular music, there can be no avoiding the bitter truth - that far worse than the gangsters, the corruption, and the out-front racism was the true angel of death that hovered over the music business for decades: heroin. Any history of American music that leaves out the huge role heroin played is just selling you a pack of lies.

Need I add?..... great collection, BB! You rescued me from Drunken Grandma!
