VA - The Progressive Rock Box Set [2015] (6 x CD's)

Born as a result of the artistic and social movement that resulted in the psychedelic revolution of the mid-60s, the 'progressive sound' defied the conventions of the music industry, with extended songs and ambitious song structures, with influences ranging from blues and rock to jazz and classical music. The Progressive Box is a phenomenal work that features all the genre's key artists (Yes, Genesis, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Rick Wakeman, Crimson, Alan Parsons, Focus) and cult figures that still fascinate millions of followers worldwide (Soft Machine, Van Der Graaf Generator, Magma, The Nice, Caravan, Gong, Hawkwind, Can, Tangerine Dream, Brainticket, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Banco Del Soccorso Mutio, Fairport Convention, Affinity, Carmen, Atomic Rooster, Third Ear Band, Brand X, Steve Hillage, Curved Air, Greenslade and etc). With a stunning cover art and remastered sound, The Progressive Box is an essential album for fans of any kind of music. (Amazon)

  1. Wow; what a set, Butter - big names rubbing shoulders with the unjustifiably underrecognized. Thanks; nice! I thought for a moment that the artwork was yours, too, but it looks like someone else has been gazing over Roger Dean's shoulder... and paying close attention. Still, I bet you could match that artist brushstroke for brushstroke - and here's the soundtrack to it all. Cheers!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
The Artwork is very nice. The music within is also great, It doesn't ever drag-on.

      Cheers.

  3. Cool. An interesting group of differing Prog styles, both familiar and not.

In looking over the list, a few thoughts and recollections.. Procol Harum's signature song "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" was so stand-out at the time and one I thought "now that's a classic" upon first hearing. I remember having heard the Stackridge song "Slark" (not represented here) from their 1st album and my record shop having to special order it from some obscure overseas dealer because they had never heard of them here before. (Also not on here but) Similar in name, the song "Sloth" from the fine album "Full House" was my introduction to the ever-changing Fairport Convention. That Focus song "Hokus Pokus" just jumps out at you and people would ALWAYS ask either "Who was that?" or just as likely "WHAT WAS THAT?". The tune "Lady Eleanor" from Lindisfarne is still a cherished listen for me to this day. Vanilla Fudge became known for their organ-drenched psych-out covers of songs with huge base lines and monster drumming.. they were great and truly unique! Finally, Caravan's "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" album is one of the most favored in my Progressive collection, and I had to special order that one, too! Humorously, Caravan had one of the most clever, possibly thought-provoking album titles.. "Cunning Stunts". I always had to go slow and seriously brain-check my mouth before speaking whenever I said "Cunning Stunts" on-air.. HA! One of the dangers of live radio. Fun times!

I really hope you don't mind my crazy commentary BB ... but thanks for this collection!

    1. Thanks mrRadio,
I always enjoy your take on what is posted here. I don't consider your comments as crazy commentary and I am sure the other readers here get a kick out of your comments too. I have prepared several Butterboy Comps lately and one is Live Prog also The Hammond organ in rock ... The tracks you mention above may show up in these comps. I have been listening to Camel all day and got hooked on Supertwister for a few hours.... I purchased Caravan's album "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" from a little basement record store in Melbourne when it was released an it remains a favorite for me too. When I started collecting Italian progressive rock that was a changing experience for me too. There are many fantastic Progressive rock records to explore. I remember having to buy all the Nektar albums when they were available. I still have all the Bellaphon and Bacillus Records. Well thats another story...

      Cheers.

Server speed is not set by me, possibly they are doing something to improve their site. I hope it improves for you soon.

  5. I would not recommend this compilation, and especially not for any newbie to prog rock. There are way too many live, tribute, reunion, shortened and otherwise inferior versions of classics and the song selection is also very questionable. As a sucker for good prog I really got angry with this the more I listened!
