DEAN MARTIN

Dean Martin - The Test of Time, The Complete Singles 1949-1961 [2017] (5 x CDs)

This 5-CD box set on the French, Le Chant Du Monde Lable. claims to offer the buyer all of Dean’s Capitol singles between 1949 and 1961. For the most part, this is what you get. Short of purchasing the expensive Bear Family sets, this is one of the best collections of the songs that Capitol released in the U.S. in the 78 & 45 RPM “single” format. Many of these tracks are hard to find and should please the fan who doesn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for the Bear Family boxes.

The listener should be aware of what is missing. Since Dean signed with Capitol in 1948, the four singles from that year are not included. For some reason his first two singles of 1949 are not in this package. They are “Have A Little Sympathy” backed with “Johnny Get Your Girl” and “Dreamy Old New England Moon” backed with “Three Wishes”. Also, the producers elected to leave off all the duets he did. This means you don’t get the songs with Margaret Whiting, Helen O’Connell, Nat “King” Cole and Line Renaud. While it may not be important to most listeners, the songs are not grouped in pairs like the original singles. CD1 does start with 1949 and 1961 is on CD5.

Nonetheless, a wonderful collection of Dean's old Capitol singles in a fold out digi-pack and the songs sounds great. (Amazon)

  1. Dean Martin is surely one of the best and most notable song interpreters for this era. He is definitely one of my favorites (along with Perry Como). In many ways I think he was better at it than Sinatra even. Nat King Cole was another terrific contemporary. These guys were rivals but really these and other like crooners each had their own great voices, choice of songs, arrangement styles, choruses, instrumentation, and vibe that made them unique. I mean I don't think you can really compare them as one being better than another. Deno sure could swing through those quasi-Italian numbers though. Nice low baritone richness. So smooth, relaxed... and like Como, could infuse a sense of humor at times. Martin and Como had their own TV Variety Shows for a while as well.
Note that Butterboy previously posted another Dean Martin set... so look for that. I hope we eventually see some Dean Martin material from the (post Capitol) Reprise days (think "Everybody Loves Somebody" and later).
Thank you very much BB. Some classic music here. This is great!

    1. From the artists you mentioned above my order would be 1) Dean Martin, 2) Nat King Cole, 3) Perry Como then Frank Sinatra. This does not take away anything from any of them. They are all Indvidual artists and do not sound alike at all. But I would always gravitate to Dean Martin for the sound of his voice alone. He is more versatile than he is often given credit for Some late 60s and 70's material is absolutely terrific. There will definitely more Dean Martin in the future. I have most of the big sets.
Glad this one brings joy. Wonderful comments.
      Cheers.
