Andres Segovia - Milestones of a Guitar Legend [2014] (10 x CD's)

ANDRES SEGOVIA

Andres Segovia - Milestones of a Guitar Legend  [2014] (10 x CD's)

Andrés Segovia, Marquis of Salobreia, was born near Jaen, Granada, Spain. He became a guitarist against the double opposition of his parents. First, they opposed his learning the guitar and got him cello and piano teachers instead. When he persisted in teaching himself guitar, they opposed his becoming a musician. He sought a guitar teacher at the Granada Institute of Music when he studied there, but found none, so continued learning the instrument on his own. He made his debut at the Centro Artística in Granada at the age of 15. He played so skillfully that he was urged to become a professional soloist. He played in Madrid in 1912, at the Paris Conservatory in 1915, and in Barcelona in 1916, and made a wildly successful tour of South America in 1919. He made his formal debut in Paris on April 7, 1924, in a program which included a new work written for him by Albert Roussel, named Segovia. It was the first of many works which were written for him by distinguished composers, enriching the instrument's repertory as Segovia had elevated its artistic potential. His U.S. debut was at Town Hall, New York, on January 8, 1928.

A box set celebrating one of the great virtuoso's of the 20th century, the Spanish classical guitarist Andrés Segovia. Contains 10 CDs of music recorded by Segovia between 1949 and 1962 which showcase a truly magnificent range of Maestro's skills both in terms of expression and technique. This is a definite proof of Segovia's unmatched brilliance and instrument mastery.

...Numerous compositions which now belong to the classical guitar repertoire were originally written for Segovia, among them works by Manuel Ponce, Federico Moreno Torroba, Joaquín Rodrigo, Fernando Sor, Joaquin Turina and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. These and other pieces, for instance by Grieg, Schubert, Rameau, Franck, Schumann and Chopin, can be heard in this collection.  No other guitarist changed the image of this instrument as much as Andrés Segovia. His influence on the development and importance of classical guitar playing in the 20th century was immense. Through his perfect technique and style Segovia set new standards in the modern art of guitar playing. At the same time he was instrumental in widening and increasing the quality of its repertoire. He arranged music from the Baroque and Classical epochs and his colossal series of transcriptions and editions laid the foundations for the renaissance of the guitar in the 20th century. His Bach arrangements amounted to a musical revelation not only for admirers of that great Baroque master's music. (classicselectworld.com)

"He made the guitar an instrument to be mentioned in the same breath as Casals' cello or Kreisler's violin." - New York Tribune

  8. Excellent, thanks BB. I saw him live in Portsmouth Guildhall UK early 70's - no amplification, audience frightened to make any sound or cough, clap only when you were absolutely sure the piece has finished, late arrivals got the evil eye. Didn't really have much of an expectation just knew he was a legend - he was an absolute master at his craft, I came away enlightened.
