The Big Payback is a 4CD box set of rare soul and funk released in 1998 by Clubmasters. It consists of 10 songs on each disc, featuring the works of Syl Johnson, Eddie Bo, Chuck Carbo, and Nu Sound Express, a few of which have been sampled over the years in hip-hop. Many of these recordings are sourced from vinyl. Funk had great musicians. Funk had great politics. Funk had great style. These 4 CD's are peppered with the finest, really finest funk and acid jazz!

Eddie Bo was such and amazing, and thoroughly underappreciated artist. The song on this collection featuring Marilyn Barbarin is also an Eddie Bo cut, and its his band as back-up. There's also a classic song by a group using the name of Roger & The Gypsies, that is also Bo - Pass The Hatchet (parts 1 and 2). Eddie died under somewhat mysterious circumstances a little over 10 years ago. Marilyn is still with us and performs regularly in New Orleans - her last recording was a great single she released with a good friend of mind, Marc Stone, under the name The New Soul Finders. I believe I have most of what he recorded (but, he used a ton of pseudonyms, so who knows), so if you are looking for anything, let me know and I'll check my collection. The best overall compilation I've found is the one that Ace issued a few years ago, Baby I'm Wise. Marc Stone just finished mixing a new album, and Marilyn sings on a few songs so that is something to look forward to in 2022.
