VA - The Stiff Records Box Set [1992] (4 x CD's)

At 98 tracks across four jam-packed CD's this is the definitive overview of the Stiff label from #1 hits to rare curiosities. As great as Rhino's Stiff box set was a decade or so ago, this box set is closer to the original eclectic nature of the label and features a lot more of the one-offs and under-appreciated acts. Includes tracks from early signings like Nick Lowe, the Damned and Elvis Costello up to today's Stiff signings Ian Dury, the Pogues, Kirsty MacColl, Wreckless Eric and a host of others along the way. Compiled by Stiff authority Pete Gardiner with booklet notes by Stiff aficionado Ian Peel with help from original Stiff press officer Andy Murray. Remastered by Tim Turan at Turan Audio for superb sound quality.

Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar. This collection is so full of unknown bits of whimsy and little-known cuts by more popular artist that it starts to become more of a treasure chest than a "best of." This collection is full of fun little nuggets. There is a charming wackiness to this collection and to the whole Stiff attitude. This is a great collection for exploring what the Brits were doing. There is a fabulous cut of Desmond Dekker's "Isrealites" on disc three. Great overview of the stiff phenomenon (Amazon)

    1. Hi lemonflag
Only a small percentage of people comment when they take a download, I suspect that an even smaller percentage comment if the don't download. Some do comment in appreciation.
Thank you for raising the question and thanks you for commenting even when you don't want a particular share.

      Cheers.

    2. Funny you should mention... I've reached the point where I either just don't want to add yet another file to my collection, or I've already got the CD.. I still check.. to see id there's something special. However, since I'm often disappointed, I stick with those blogs that actually have something to offer.. such as yours. Even, sometimes, just the write-ups about the album or artist are worth it...

  3. I've got the boxed set. Bought in on a whim as it looked kinda cool. I knew a few of the artists, some by name only, others via the tunes. I am glad I bought it, it's fantastic.

  4. Thanks BB! I remember the Stiff record label across the commons in Barnes. My best friend's dad was a designer and knew many of the musicians. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories for me!
