FLEETWOOD MAC

Fleetwood Mac - Gold Dust Radio 1975-1988 the Legendary Broadcasts [2016] (6 x CD's)

Over the six discs, it is a fantastic and varied selection. Despite selling a zillion copies of 'Rumours' and a considerable number of others ('Tango In The Night' was a highpoint during the eighties), Fleetwood Mac continue to divide opinion among the Rock fraternity. I have no hesitation in stating my love for the band (1975 onwards), a love initially kindled by my fondness for Stevie Nicks and her solo output.

There have been several official live FM releases to feature the 'Rumours' line-up, notably 1980's 'Live', 1998's 'The Dance' and 2004's 'Live In Boston' (minus Christine McVie) but this compendium is far and away the most comprehensive. Each disc contains select performances from an individual show, originally recorded for radio broadcast, to coincide with a recent album release and its promotional run. The discs run chronologically, beginning with a 1975 show and culminating with a selection of takes from other shows and TV appearances. The sound quality is uniformly excellent throughout. There are the occasional bum notes, missed cues, drop-outs, vocal hiccups and periods of self-indulgence, but that merely enhances the live listening experience and proves there has been no studio doctoring to bolster the sound.

As you would expect some songs are repeated, primarily 'Songbird' (three), 'You Make Loving Fun' (four), 'Rhiannon' (four)' 'Gold Dust Woman' (three), 'Go Your Own Way' (three) and '...Funny' (three), but on the whole, over the six discs, it is a fantastic and varied selection .  (Dave Bott)

  1. Thanks for this Butterboy. I wasn't a fan of the original Fleetwood Mac, nothing they did particularly impressed or even interested me. I was seriously into blues at the same time as them and had all the same LPs they were listening to. So I just had no interest in listening to Peter Green play a Freddie King number, or Jeremy Spencer sing an Elmore James song, when I already had the far superior originals of these songs in my record collection. But when they teamed up with Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham I sat up and took notice, they had progressed and matured into an outstanding band with some truly impressive original songs.

    1. Hi Bob Mac,
Thanks for that summary.Your feelings are clearly highlighted for the two Fleetwood Macs. The original blues versions are often superior in my opinion too. I always saw them as two separate bands. Both Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham added a great deal to the new Fleetwood mac sound. I liked both FM's, but my love at the time was for progressive rock. That is another story.

      Cheers.

    2. I considere the original Fleetwood Mac as a very good blues band with his great guitarist Peter Green. I'm a great fan of real classic blues (the three Kings, Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland, etc...) but I think the "whities" (John Mayall, Canned Heat, Mike Bloomfield, etc...) had impulsed a rock touch to the blues and allowed recognition to the genitors of the blues despite they stole their music. Muddy Waters himself said it.
Rather I don't like the Fleetwood Mac FM music for escalators.

  2. I think that Bob Mac is still severe with Peter Green. The albums made, like "The Hard Road" with Jon Mayall, very respected by the Chicago bluesman. Why Eric Clapton and why not Peter Green?... Thank you Gentlemen! Patrick

  3. Sorry... John Mayall.
Fleetwood Mac's S/T debut album is well worth giving a try for those who enjoy blues rock even a little bit. The album is a nice mix of classic blues covers and their own material. Some of the highlights include songs like "Merry Go Round" and "Cold Black Night" for example.

This is a good blues rock debut by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.
I consider Green as one of my favourite guitarists and his guitarwork in these early Fleetwood Mac albums is damn strong.
